H2 testing programme begins

Technicians from Valenciaport, the National Hydrogen Centre and the company Carburos Metálicos will supervise the operation, the first of its kind in a Spanish port.

Throughout January a range of tests will be carried out with materials such as nitrogen, helium and hydrogen to test the elements and mechanisms that make up the hydrogen generator at the Port of Valencia.

The generator was installed last July as part of the €4 million H2Ports project. Positioning Valencia as the ‘pioneering and emblematic port in Europe in the development of hydrogen technologies’, it will supply compressed gas to a range of prototype equipment including a reach stacker and container stacker.

A conventional 4×4 tractor unit will also be adapted with the addition of an H2 fuel cell for loading and unloading operations at Valencia Terminal Europa of the Grimaldi Group. The machinery will arrive during the first quarter of the year and will be part of the two-year testing project.
