AMSTERDAM TO INVEST IN GHANA

Amsterdam Port Consultants (APC) will invest $60m in the rehabilitation of Ghanas Takoradi Port as part of a 25-year BOT contract, although first requires approval from Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.

The investment would be required to rehabilitate existing quays and upgrade manganese and bauxite handling facilities.

According to Venda K.

Sykora, md of APC, the port would only become viable if the Western Rail Line is ceded to a South African company as a concession, which would then allow a major overhaul to be undertaken. A major new container terminal is also planned. However, Sykora argues that the $250m port redevelopment price tag which Japanese consultants said would be required to bring the port up to modern standards, needs to be invested in a single phase. In effect, the APC proposal does not initially include extension of the port breakwaters, hence the perceived lower level of investment.
