Asciano slams decision to add new operators in Australia

Australian ports operator Asciano has criticised the New South Walesand Queensland governments, saying it was risky and expensive tointroduce a third terminal operator to Sydneys Port Botany andBrisbane Fisherman Islands.

Asciano, the parent company of the only Australian-owned stevedore, Patrick, said that it would be highly unfair to allow another foreign terminal operator to enter the market and subsidise it, while the existing operators had to fend for themselves.

Meanwhile, the company has rejected an unsolicited A$2.89bn ($2.5bn) takeover bid from US private equity group TPG Capital and independent investment fund Global Infrastructure Partner.

Asciano believes the bid undervalued the business.
