Hedland puts inner harbour to work

Port Hedland has reviewed its operations and decided to optimise its inner harbour space, identifying under-utilised capacity that has led to approvals being granted for three developments in the inner harbour.

These will enable the port to reach its export capacity of up to 495m tonnes per annum. In the 2011-2012 financial year, total throughput for Port Hedland was 245m tonnes.

New works include an iron ore berth for Fortescue Metals, two new berths for North West Infrastructure, and two additional berths for BHP Billiton.
