APMT fixes sights on Abidjan
APM Terminals and a consortium consisting of Bolloré Africa Logistics and Bouyges says it has been named as the preferred bidder to manage a second container terminal at the Port of Abidjan.
The port has a master plan to expand as a regional hub for West Africa and the strategy for the second terminal is to increase trans-shipment traffic through the port.
When the tender was launched for the new terminal last summer, plans for the facility called for the investment of 300bn Central African Francs (US$590m) over a 21 year concessional term.
The consortium’s public-private partnership aims to dredge the new terminal to a depth of 16m in order to accommodate vessels of up to 8,000 teu capacity. Representing a first for port operations in the Ivory Coast and Africa, the 35 new hectares of yard and 1,100 metres of quay will be equipped with ship to shore gantry cranes and electric rubber tyred gantry cranes (eRTGs).
By winning the tender for the new terminal, APMT is looking to retain its status as the largest port operator in West Africa – it already has nine existing facilities in the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and Angola.
