APMT begins new Angolan chapter

As part of the concession, Sogester will operate, maintain and develop the port, which serves the hinterland from Namibe to Menongue and through the city of Lubango, to give the local market the port infrastructure it needs, a spokesperson for APMT told Port Strategy.

Sogester will implement processes to improve productivity and increase the number of vessels calls and volumes going through the city, as part of the port master plan designed to enhance Namibe’s economic growth, job creation, transportation competitiveness and community. Investments in equipment, infrastructure, training and safety will also be made.

“We look forward to creating higher levels of productivity, safety and efficiency to help grow Namibe and the broader regional market through a more competitive port,” said Richard Mitchell, managing director, Sogester.

APMT says as the only port in Southern Angola, the Port of Namibe is in a strong commercial position with a growing population. Equally important, Namibe is ideally located to some of the finest quality marble and granite souring in the world.

The Port of Namibe has a 480m berth with 10.5m depth and a 274m berth with a 6m depth, serving both container and general cargo. Following investments, the new port is expected to significantly improve bulk handling capacities.
