APM Terminals makes Mobile moves
APM Terminals is investing in two ship-to-shore cranes at its Mobile facility as it looks to double handling capacity at the US Gulf’s deepest port.
The order for the super-post panamax STS cranes is part of a $40m infrastructure investment to increase the terminal’s capacity from 350,000 teu to 475,000 teu. The operator is also expanding the container yard by 20 acres.
APMT has the option to further increase capacity to over 1.3m teu to cater for increased traffic taking advantage of the expanded Panama Canal and local industrial projects.
In support of this, the Alabama State Port Authority has begun construction of an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility for the Port of Mobile which will connect the APM Terminals facility by rail to markets in the US Southeast and Mid-West. The facility is scheduled to become operational in early 2016.
