Bromma adds weight to regulation warning
Spreader manufacturer Bromma has added its voice to industry concerns that ports will not be able to meet incoming regulations on container weighing in time for the July 2016 deadline.
Its fear is that lacklustre take up of existing technology to calculate loads could lead to a bottleneck closer to the deadline as terminals scramble to retrofit load sensors.
Marketing vice-president Lars Meurling warned: “We have supplied between 500-600 new spreaders with load sensing, but that is not enough.”
Bromma’s Vikram Raman added: “The problem will be the retrofit: there are 8,000 existing spreaders, the majority of which do not have load sensing. This ‘existing population’ needs to be taken care of.”
The company’s weight verification system mounts load sensors on the spreader twistlocks and is one of a number of solutions available to container terminal operators.
Bromma is unwilling to increase capacity to cater for any last minute surge in orders as there is no guarantee that its solution will be the preferred option.
