Hedland posts strong volumes
Despite a downturn in Chinese demand, Australia’s Port Hedland and Port of Dampier have posted year-on-year growth in throughput for the first quarter of the year.
Pilbara Ports Authority – overseeing both ports – posted a total monthly throughput of 53.7m tonnes in March, an increase of 7% from the same month in 2015.
Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 39.9m tonnes, an increase of 8% from the previous year. Dampier recorded monthly throughput of 13.7m tonnes, an increase of 6% from the same month in 2015. The throughput improves on the previous high of 39.4m tonnes set in September 2015.
In a breakdown of the figures, exports to China grew to 32.6m tonnes compared with 29.14m tonnes in February and 31.2m tonnes in the same month in 2015.
