Electric container stackers

This is the first batch of pure electric empty container stackers in operation at the terminals as well as in Shenzhen.

The empty container stacker is capable of running continuously for more than 12 hours and takes just one hour to fully recharge. Average power consumption for handling one teu is 1 kWh with a CO2 emission of 0.96kg, a reduction of around 45% per teu compared with a diesel-powered equivalent.

Emissions of NOx and particulate matter are zero and the electric stacker is said to be cheaper to maintain than a diesel-powered stacker.

The new stackers mark another milestone on DaChan Bay Terminals’ decarbonisation journey. The container terminal became the first in the world to deploy a full fleet of electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes in 2007 and also the first in South China to offer shore-based power at all berths in December 2019.

DaChan Bay Terminals has ordered a second batch of electric empty container stackers which is expected to be delivered in February 2023.
