MPA Singapore completes solar installation

The installation coincides with the 20th anniversary of MSP, which opened in 2006 to replace Clifford Pier. The facility has since served as Singapore’s primary passenger ferry terminal for the Southern Islands, while also supporting crew changes for vessels operating in the port.

A total of 1,092 solar photovoltaic panels have been installed across approximately 3,200 square metres of rooftop and canopy space at MSP. The system can generate up to 780,000 kWh of electricity each year, equivalent to the annual consumption of around 180 four-room HDB flats.

The renewable energy system is expected to meet a significant proportion of the pier’s electricity requirements and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from MPA’s shore-based operations. Its electrical systems will be progressively upgraded to maximise the use of solar-generated power.

The installation also has a role in supporting the maritime sector’s transition towards cleaner energy. The solar system will contribute to the current and future charging requirements of electric harbour craft operating from MSP.

The project supports Singapore’s wider GreenGov.SG sustainability movement, which aims to increase the use of renewable energy across public-sector operations.

MPA said the MSP project forms part of broader efforts to expand renewable energy generation at its shore-based facilities. The authority is also working to replace diesel generators used to power equipment on Pulau Satumu.

Pulau Satumu is expected to be fully powered by renewable electricity before the end of 2027, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels at MPA facilities.

The solarisation of Marina South Pier adds renewable generation capacity to a key maritime facility while supporting Singapore’s efforts to reduce emissions from shore-based operations and prepare its port infrastructure for greater electrification.
