Alicante advances its green hydrogen strategy

The Port of Alicante has launched a tender for its first renewable hydrogen plant, reinforcing a green roadmap that supports decarbonisation, innovation and long-term competitiveness across port operations.

Approved by the Alicante Port Authority, the tender covers construction and operation of a renewable hydrogen production and supply plant at Berth 19, forming part of the so-called PORTALI-H2 project.

The new tender gives concrete form to President Luis Rodríguez’s vision of “developing a port oriented to decarbonisation”, positioning green hydrogen, electrification and renewable energy as core levers for operational change.

EU alignment

The PORTALI-H2 project aligns with European climate objectives and the port’s strategy to become a smart, sustainable Mediterranean energy hub, while strengthening the knowledge base that underpins marine training, ocean conservation and youth training across the wider port ecosystem.

By acting as a testbed for clean industrial technologies, the project will also support skills development and knowledge generation relevant to future marine training and youth training needs linked to low-emission port and terminal operations.

Under the proposed 30-year concession, the plant will be located at the southern end of Berth 19, occupying around 500 m², with a further 3,000 m² allocated on the breakwater for renewable power generation.

The technical solution is expected to include approximately 1 MW of electrolyser capacity, with designs required to minimise visual impact while meeting strict safety and environmental standards.

Powered primarily by renewable energy generated within the port, the facility is intended to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower the port’s carbon footprint.

By offering cleaner energy alternatives for vessels, port equipment and logistics chains, the project reinforces ocean conservation objectives while contributing to a resilient, low-emission port model.
