Baleària orders new LNG-fuelled ferry

The Spanish shipping company will invest €175m in building the ship which is designed to be the largest of its kind in Europe, and one of the first passenger ferry to be LNG-fuelled.

“We want to establish a before and after in maritime transport, incorporating the latest technology to make the trip a unique experience,” said Baleària chairman, Adolfo Utor.

He added: “The ship also meets the need of logistics operators, both in service and capacity, which will be key to the viability of the project.”

The ship will be 232.2m-long ship with a beam of 30.4m, it is expected to reduce the emissions of CO2 and NOx by 40% and avoid emissions of particular matters.

In order to achieve this, it will be installed with solar panels and the hull will be designed to reduce the requirement of power.

There will be a use of high efficiency propellers, types of rudders to curb fuel consumption and LED technology for lighting.

The smart ship will allow the passengers to access the onboard amenities by means of a smart phone and integrates all the on boarders by an intercom.

Equipped to ferry 1,600 passengers and 340 other vehicles, the ship offers an array of amenities which include two restaurants, four bars a playground, two multipurpose theatres, two pools and two hot tubs, gym, hairdresser and lounge, library, cinema.
