Canadian multi-million green funding injection

The funding, provided through the ’Green Shipping Corridor Program’, will help Halifax prepare for the future of sustainable shipping by investing in green fuels infrastructure and workforce development. 

“This is an important project supporting the future for the port and our competitiveness,” said Fulvio Fracassi, president and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority.

“As the global shipping industry continues to take steps to decarbonise, we need to be prepared for the transition. We’re pleased to have been awarded this funding and look forward to embarking on next steps.”

Continued collaboration

Major initiatives being backed by the funding include risk assessments for alternative-fueled vessels, electrification projects and feasibility studies on lower-carbon fuels like hydrogen.

The port will also work with its port partners to support electrification efforts investing in equipment to continue lowering emissions at the port.

This funding builds on Halifax’s existing efforts, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hamburg Port Authority, signed in September 2022.

This collaboration was set up to develop port infrastructure for green hydrogen exports and imports while fostering cooperation between stakeholders to accelerate the global energy transition.

At the time, Premier Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia, said: “The Halifax Port Authority and Hamburg Port Authority are demonstrating leadership in this sector. They are not waiting for the arrival of hydrogen to begin their operational changes. They are doing the work today.”
