Developing a floating hydrogen terminal

The terminal will play a key role in Europe’s clean energy transition by enabling the import of hydrogen from producers in the Middle East, North Africa and the Americas.

“With its strategic location and well-established marine infrastructure, Port La-Nouvelle is ideally positioned to become a key entry point for hydrogen and low-carbon fuels,” said Erik Nyheim, president and chief executive of Höegh Evi.

Scheduled to begin operating in 2030, the terminal will have the capacity to import up to 210,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually, depending on the readiness of France’s hydrogen pipeline infrastructure.

The project, in collaboration with European initiatives such as HySoW Hydrogen and gas pipeline operator Teréga, aims to connect Port-La Nouvelle to major hydrogen transport networks, boosting the industrial and energy profile of the Occitanie region.

This development will also create local jobs as the partners work on feasibility studies and infrastructure design.

“The port of Port-La Nouvelle is eager to accommodate new types of traffic, particularly those associated with renewable energies and especially those linked to hydrogen.”
