H2 fuels the future of river cruise
Zepp.solutions, a Dutch innovator in hydrogen fuel cell technology, has been selected as the fuel cell system supplier for the NERA-H2 project, an initiative aimed at transforming the river cruise industry.
Funded by the Dutch Maritime Master Plan, the project seeks to introduce hydrogen as a clean energy source by retrofitting a river cruise vessel with a modular hydrogen and battery-electric drivetrain.
With over 420 vessels operating in Europe, the river cruise sector faces mounting pressure due to stricter emissions regulations in cities like Amsterdam, Vienna and Basel. It is hoped this project could lead to large-scale hydrogen adoption across the sector.

“The maritime sector’s decarbonisation efforts must focus not only on newbuild vessels but also on upgrading existing fleets.
“NERA-H2 presents a well-structured approach, and we look forward to the collaboration.”
Zepp.solutions will provide its X150 fuel cell modules, delivering over 1MW of power, a system already proven in heavy-duty sectors such as hydrogen-powered trucks.
The NERA-H2 project is pivotal to the Dutch Maritime Master Plan which aims to have 40 zero-emission ships in operation by 2030.
