HPC to manage Baltic H2 project

This ambitious project, led by the Port of Hamburg Marketing, will run from March 2025 to February 2028, with the goal of promoting the adoption of hydrogen-based derivatives as fuels for cargo and maritime industries across Baltic Sea ports.

“This project is fundamental for the maritime industry’s next decade, enabling ports to handle sustainable energy carriers and support alternative fuel bunkering,” explained Stefan Breitenbach, head of project department at Port of Hamburg Marketing.

“It also strengthens the Port of Hamburg’s integration within the Baltic region.”

H2Deri@BSP will focus on developing market forecasts, investment models, bunkering technologies, berth mapping and safety regulations to facilitate the handling of hydrogen derivatives such as methanol and ammonia.

As project manager, HPC will oversee coordination, planning, progress monitoring and financial management, ensuring the transparent use of public funding.

“HPC’s role combines decades of project development and coordination experience with a profound understanding of port operations and sustainability issues,” said Hartmut Beyer, head of co-funding management at HPC.

The project will involve 15 partners from seven Baltic Sea Region countries, including port authorities, energy providers and terminal operators, and aims to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen derivatives, reducing CO2 emissions and supporting the transition to sustainable maritime energy systems.
