Hydrogen at València

The agreement between the port and the National Hydrogen Centre (CNH2) will see the construction of a mobile hydrogen supply station providing fuel to a reach stacker crane and terminal yard tractor unit prototypes.

“We are the first port in Europe to incorporate hydrogen technologies to reduce the environmental impact of its operations,” said president of the Port Authority of València, Aurelio Martínez.

The deal is part of the H2PORTS project, a €4 million initiative, co-financed by the Clean Hydrogen JU programme, to promote the take-up of hydrogen fuel and technologies in ports.

The director of CNH2, Emilio Nieto, said that València was a pioneering port in Europe in the development of hydrogen technologies. “There was a lot of competition from other places but the Valencia project was selected because it was the most complete and innovative,” he said.

The hydrogen plant will be located on the north quay, at Bracet de la Gità, and will supply the equipment forming part of this initiative, the first of which is a reach stacker for trial at the MSC Terminal Valencia. The second piece of equipment will be a 4×4 tractor unit for testing in loading/unloading operations at Valencia Terminal Europa of the Grimaldi Group.
