Hydrogen electrolyser pilot targets scale-up
Hydrogen electrolyser company, Spiral Hydrogen has secured €2.7 million in pre-seed funding and a further €700,000 grant to advance hydrogen production technology at the Port of Rotterdam.
The investment, backed by byFounders, Norrsken Evolve and Superangel, will support deployment of its first pilot system within the Port of Rotterdam ecosystem in partnership with SwitcH2 Offshore.
“This capital takes us from the lab to pilot deployment,” the company said in a statement.
“In partnership with SwitcH2, a company specialising in offshore ammonia solutions, Spiral are building our first centrifugal bubble-free electrolyser system in the Port of Rotterdam.”
Scaling hydrogen production
The project is aimed at validating scalable hydrogen production technology under real-world industrial conditions while strengthening port infrastructure for future alternative fuel supply chains.
Spiral Hydrogen said its patent-pending hydrogen electrolyser architecture eliminates gas bubble formation on electrodes, a problem where conventional systems can lose up to 30% of input energy.
The company claims the technology can achieve more than 90% efficiency, compared with the 60-70% range typically associated with conventional electrolysers.
This pilot project forms part of wider efforts across European port infrastructure to scale commercially viable hydrogen production and support decarbonisation targets in maritime and industrial sectors.
Spiral Hydrogen’s containerised systems integrate electrolysis stacks, gas handling, power electronics, controls and safety architecture into modular units designed for deployment in port and industrial environments.
The company said that its centrifugal design removes the need for external pumps and cooling systems, while in-situ catalyst redeposition technology could extend stack lifetimes by up to four times compared with current industry standards.
