Hydrogen electrolyser planned at Gothenburg

The Norwegian hydrogen company HYDS plans to establish production of green hydrogen within the Port of Gothenburg, reinforcing the port’s role as a hub for alternative fuels.

“We would like to warmly welcome HYDS to the Port of Gothenburg and view their investment in green hydrogen in the port area very positively,” said Viktor Allgurén, head of innovation at the Port of Gothenburg.

“A transition to many different fuels is taking place here, and the production of green hydrogen in the port creates the conditions for the transition of several transport modes in and around the port.”

Value chain

The project follows several years of development and permitting and is intended to support the transition of multiple transport modes operating in and around the port.

It’s a project which originated from a 2021 agreement between the Port of Gothenburg and Statkraft to assess hydrogen production within the port area.

HYDS has now acquired the project company from Statkraft, including the lease agreement, environmental permit and external financing, enabling a short start-up phase ahead of production.

The planned facility will have a capacity of five to ten MW, producing two to four tonnes of hydrogen per day. This output is equivalent to up to 20,000 litres of diesel and could reduce CO₂ emissions by as much as 60 tonnes per day.

The Port of Gothenburg is systematically developing port infrastructure to support alternative fuels, including hydrogen.

With an existing public hydrogen refuelling station already in operation, the new electrolyser will complete a full hydrogen value chain from production to end use, primarily serving heavy transport and logistics.

Hydrogen production is scheduled to begin in 2029.
