Jersey looks to advance its alternative fuels expertise

Ports of Jersey has announced a unique marine hydrogen internship in partnership with OceansLab, offering hands-on experience in hydrogen technologies and alternative fuels within the maritime industry.

The partnership with OceansLab, a marine hydrogen accelerator founded by yachtsman Phil Sharp, aims to explore hydrogen fuel-cell technology for port infrastructure and vessels, including ferries, tugs and cargo ships.

“I’m pleased to see this educational initiative coming to fruition with Ports of Jersey. This partnership will explore how we can apply hydrogen fuel-cell technology and green hydrogen fuels to start decarbonising the Island’s maritime industry,” said Phil Sharp, CEO of OceansLab.

Hydrogen accelerator

The internship is open to Jersey students and early-career professionals, the internship reflects Ports of Jersey’s commitment to decarbonisation and sustainable port infrastructure.

The two-month paid internship, based at OceansLab’s headquarters in La Rochelle, France, offers a comprehensive introduction to hydrogen technologies, including fuel cells, production, storage and applications in marine transportation.

Interns will also gain insights into regulatory frameworks and challenges, equipping them with the skills to drive sustainability in the marine sector.

Matt Thomas, CEO of Ports of Jersey, added: “It’s our responsibility to work towards sustainable, decarbonised travel. This is a step towards a zero-emissions marine industry, benefiting both Islanders and the planet.”

Last month, the Port of Jersey’s plans for the redevelopment of Elizabeth Harbour were approved aligning with Jersey’s sustainable development and contributing to Jersey’s net zero trajectory.
