Jiaxing Port deploys H2 truck fleet

Known as the ‘Antelope Hydrogen’ fleet, these 49-tonne vehicles handle short-haul container transport between storage yards and docks, replacing two-thirds of the port’s traditional diesel trucks.

This transition marks a significant step toward greener port logistics. The hydrogen fleet cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 tonnes annually while saving approximately 3 million yuan (about $414,000) in fuel costs. On a per-container basis, hydrogen transport is 1.40 yuan (about $0.19) cheaper than diesel.

Hydrogen’s high energy density – 1,000 times that of wood, 6.8 times coal and 3.3 times gasoline – along with zero tailpipe emissions, makes it a compelling alternative for heavy-duty applications.

The Jiaxing initiative demonstrates that hydrogen-powered trucks can meet the demands of high-throughput port operations without compromising efficiency.

Jiaxing’s successful deployment of large-scale hydrogen freight technology sets a benchmark for other ports across China, offering a scalable model for reducing emissions in logistics-intensive sectors.
