LR and SHI team up on green ammonia FPSO

This marks a significant step in the application of FPSO technology, traditionally used in oil and gas, for the ammonia industry.

The system will use renewable energy to power the electrolysis of seawater, producing green hydrogen, which will then be combined with nitrogen to create green ammonia.

The ammonia produced will be offloaded to ammonia carriers and is expected to be integrated with offshore wind farms in Europe.

“The green ammonia market is poised to grow rapidly in the coming decades, particularly as a clean fuel alternative for the global shipping industry,” said Sean van der Post, Lloyd’s Register’s offshore business director.

The agreement, signed at Offshore Korea 2024, outlines SHI’s role in designing the FPSO, while LR will provide technical reviews and advice to ensure the development is aligned with industry standards.

“We are delighted to be working with Lloyd’s Register on this project as a part of our development efforts towards achieving net-zero and pioneering advancements in green energy,” said Hae-Ki Jang, chief technology officer of SHI.
