Milestone for Canadian Hy2gen project

The project notice submittal to Quebec’s Minister of the Environment, Fighting Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, marks the transition from planning to impact assessment and is a significant step toward establishing one of North America’s largest renewable ammonia production plants.

“With the submission of the project notice to the Minister, our project COURANT has reached a significant milestone toward its realisation,” said Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO, Hy2gen.

“We have been welcomed with open arms and want to repay the trust we have received. The demand for renewable ammonia is growing, and with a working logistics network, it can be imported and used in the EU at lower costs than renewable ammonia produced in Europe.”

Decarbonisation

The COURANT plant, set to produce 230,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually, will firstly help decarbonise the mining industry in Quebec.

But importantly, it will also serve as a proof of concept for Hy2gen’s other ammonia projects in the Americas and Nordic countries, which will also supply renewable ammonia to European industries.

This alternative fuel source will support climate goals while creating up to 1,000 jobs during construction and 300 permanent positions once operational.

The site’s strategic location in Baie-Comeau offers easy access to port facilities, electrical infrastructure and an industrial park, ensuring seamless integration into local and global supply chains. 

The plan is for construction of the plant to begin in 2027.
