Partnership targets bio-methanol supply

UK clean energy company PuriFire Energy and feeder operator X-Press Feeders will explore the supply of 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes of bio-methanol annually from planned production facilities.

Port infrastructure

The agreement also includes plans to co-develop larger port infrastructure projects across the UK and Europe to support distributed marine fuels supply networks aligned with vessel operations.

It’s an agreement which builds on collaboration through the UK Government-backed Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition and comes as shipping operators face tightening emissions rules under FuelEU Maritime.

The regulation requires greenhouse gas reductions for ships calling at EU ports, increasing demand for certified low-carbon marine fuels and reliable bunkering infrastructure.

This partnership aims to create vertically integrated fuel supply chains through decentralised production facilities located close to major port demand centres.

PuriFire’s hydrothermal gasification technology converts wastewater and waste carbon into bio-methanol and biomethane, supporting cost-competitive fuel production near key maritime hubs.

The LOI reflects growing industry focus on port infrastructure capable of supporting alternative marine fuels as operators seek long-term energy security and compliance with evolving emissions legislation.
