Peel Ports taps into biomass market

The company has inked a deal with Drax to become the renewable energy specialist’s new service provider for vessels importing biomass into the Port of Liverpool’s £100m specialist terminal.

Services provided to Drax include supporting logistics around the arrival of the vessels and crew, as well as customs clearance, before the biomass is transported by rail to Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire, the UK’s largest generator of renewable electricity.

Sebastian Gardiner, managing director at Peel Ports Logistics, said that the company was proud to have been chosen as Drax’s new shipping agency.

“The agreement is a testament to the knowledge and experience of our teams, and a real vote of confidence to start 2024,” he said.

Peel Ports Logistics has welcomed its vessel under their representation as agent – the bulk carrier, Aikaterini. Under the deal, the company expects to welcome around 50 vessels per year, each holding up to 50,000 tonnes of biomass.

The biomass handling facility at the Port of Liverpool opened in 2016, with pellets stored at one of three purpose-built silos. The port handles up to three million tonnes of imported biomass each year from around the world.
