Port of Barcelona launches H2 station tender

Located on a 7,000 sqm site in the ZAL Port logistics hub, the new facility will supply hydrogen to trucks, buses and port machinery and will be the first of its kind in the Spanish port sector. The station will produce green hydrogen on-site using electrolyzers powered entirely by renewable energy.

“The Port of Barcelona has made a firm commitment to green hydrogen as a future option to make port activity more sustainable,” said José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona.

“For years, we have hosted and participated in pilot projects that have demonstrated its viability and potential to decarbonise land freight transport. In this regard, pilot tests have been conducted on its adoption in both port machinery and trucks, demonstrating that it is a real alternative for the future.”

The 40-year concession will prioritise production capacity, technical design and commercial strategy, creating a station with a minimum production capacity of 2 MW and a mobile unit.

“Now, with the installation of the first green hydrogen production and supply plant, the Port of Barcelona is once again leading the shift toward a more sustainable future by providing all its customers with the infrastructure necessary to continue decarbonising logistics,” added Carbonell.

The port is currently focusing on building a more sustainable cruise industry with more efficient terminals and bioLNG bunkering.

This latest project may also integrate with solar energy initiatives in the ZAL area, enhancing its sustainability credentials.
