Port of Rotterdam launches ammonia partnership

Under the memorandum of understanding, OCI’s subsidiary, OCI Ammonia Distribution, will lead the sourcing and import of blue and green ammonia from major global hubs including the US, Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

The ammonia will arrive by sea at OCI Terminal Europoort (OTE) – the port’s only independent large-scale ammonia import terminal – where it will be stored and distributed for marine fuel use.

“The port of Rotterdam is preparing for a multi-fuel future to decarbonize global shipping, with ammonia as one of the future fuels,” said Matthijs van Doorn, vice president commercial at Port of Rotterdam Authority.

“It is great to see this strategic partnership develop after the successful ammonia bunkering pilot in April 2025. Such collaborations are instrumental to create safe and sustainable supply chains.”

Victrol will design, build and operate a dedicated refrigerated ammonia bunker barge. This vessel will transport ammonia from OCI’s terminal directly to ships docked at Rotterdam and other nearby ports, as well as inland industrial users.

OCI is also investing in expanding OTE’s capacity from 30,000 to 90,000 tonnes, with throughput potential of 2 million tonnes per year, reinforcing the port’s position as a key European hub for clean ammonia.
