Prema Energy partners with sustainable ports
Fuel solutions provider Prema Energy is teaming up with the Sustainable Ports Association to accelerate the decarbonisation of UK ports across the UK.
The partnership aims to deliver a programme of in-person and online events focused on helping marine and logistics companies transition to alternative fuels, including hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).
“This partnership provides a unique opportunity for two organisations with a shared vision to work together to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fuel in UK ports,” said Stephen Fletcher, managing director of Prema Energy.
“I’m excited to deepen our relationships with those working in the marine industry, gain a greater understanding of the difficulties they’re navigating with decarbonisation and share valuable advice based on our years of experience.”
Cost-competitive
Prema’s HVO30 marine fuel appeals to ports and vessel operators because it offers a practical, cost-competitive path to emissions reduction without requiring massive infrastructure porjects or engine modifications.
HVO30 is made from 99%+ waste feedstock, usually used cooking oil, ensuring sustainability from production to pump.
The removal of duty for the fuel in the UK has brought its price close to conventional marine fuels, with further competitiveness expected as demand grows.
Beyond avoiding potential fines and reputational risks tied to high-emission fuels, Prema said that switching can also strengthen contract bids where Scope 3 emissions are scrutinised.
Take the example of the Port of London Authority. In 2022, it transitioned more than 20 of its vessels to HVO fuel, which led to a 25% increase in costs.
In addition, the switch also meant that the PLA recorded an impressive 50% reduction in total emissions.
