Refueling station boosts Gothenburg’s alt fuels transition

This development is expected to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles, paving the way for a greener, carbon-neutral transport sector at Sweden’s largest port.

“The large flow of trucks to the port and the ability to refuel work machinery make this an ideal location for our hydrogen station. Combined with existing electric charging stations, the Port of Gothenburg is now fully equipped to support a transition to both electricity and hydrogen,” said Viktor Allgurén, head of innovation at the Port of Gothenburg.

Strategic location

Strategically located next to Gate 6, the entrance to the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, the station serves a critical area with 400,000 heavy vehicle passages annually.

When Stena Line relocates its current Germany and Denmark terminals to Arendal just west of the RoRo terminal, the number of vehicles in the area is expected to increase even further in the coming years.

The new facility, operated by Swedish hydrogen infrastructure company Hydri, supplies exclusively green hydrogen and is designed to meet the increasing demand for low-carbon solutions in the region.

This development is part of a larger initiative to expand hydrogen refueling and alternative fuel infrastructure across Sweden.

The hydrogen station is partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and is the first of around 20 stations Hydri plans to establish in the coming years.
