Rotterdam advances methanol storage project

The recent ceremony, held alongside the Port of Rotterdam, marks the start of a port construction project that will add significant new storage and handling capacity at the Evos Rotterdam terminal.

“[This is] the starting point for the construction phase of a project that has required close cooperation, technical focus and long-term commitment,” said Daan Vos, CEO of Evos.

”This expansion strengthens Rotterdam’s position in methanol and ethanol logistics, including low-carbon methanol, and gives our customers the capacity they need as markets continue to change.”

Fuels capacity

The project, developed in close cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam, will provide additional capacity for industrial methanol and ethanol customers while also supporting the developing market for cleaner marine fuels and bunkering operations.

It includes five new storage tanks with a combined gross capacity of 67,500 cubic metres, alongside a new pump station and jetty as part of wider port infrastructure expansion works.

Once operational in early 2028, the expansion will give Evos Rotterdam greater capacity to handle methanol and ethanol for industrial customers, as well as for the developing market in cleaner, low-carbon marine fuels and bunkering.

It’s an investment which is also expected to further strengthen Rotterdam’s role in methanol production logistics and alternative fuels infrastructure as the maritime sector accelerates efforts to reduce emissions and support the transition to lower-carbon shipping operations.
