Slovakia’s first hydrogen-powered truck

The companies have signed a letter of intent to facilitate operational testing of the truck for container transport within Metrans’ European network.

“We are delighted to test MIP’s new hydrogen-powered truck for our container transports,” said Peter Kiss, CEO of the Metrans Group.

“Through innovations like this, we can offer climate-friendly transport by road and rail, taking another step toward decarbonising European logistics chains.”

Eco-friendly

The hydrogen truck boasts a 48kg tank, providing a range of at least 600 kilometres, significantly extending long-distance capabilities compared to electric alternatives.

Powered by hydrogen from renewable sources, the truck aligns with Metrans’ goal to integrate eco-friendly technologies across its port operations and logistics networks.

Metrans’ fleet already includes electric trucks, hybrid and electric locomotives and container gantry cranes.

By adding hydrogen-powered vehicles, it said it reinforces its role in the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster, in which HHLA and partner companies are jointly exploring the use of hydrogen-powered equipment in port logistics.

With technical backing from Ford and advanced components like the REFIRE fuel cell and Dana Sumo motor, the truck represents cutting-edge hydrogen power in European heavy-duty transport.

Metrans said that it will continue to set benchmarks in port operations and alternative fuels, striving for full climate neutrality across its operations by 2040.
