Stavanger targets green ammonia bunkering

The agreement between the port, Iverson eFuels, ASCO Norge and St1 aims to use the expertise and resources of all partners to establish a value chain for the production, storage, distribution and use of green ammonia in the maritime industry.

The port says it will act as a facilitator for the collaboration and also connect the partners with similar initiatives.

“Green ammonia has the potential to make large portions of the shipping fleet emission-free,” said Eivind Hornnes, business developer at the Port of Stavanger.

“To drive the energy transition, ammonia must be as accessible as fossil fuels are today. This partnership marks a significant step towards a sustainable future for shipping and strengthens Stavanger as an energy region.”

The port sees around 2,000 calls each year and these could become emission-free, said the managing director of Iverson eFuels, Hege Økland. “We are excited to collaborate with forward-thinking companies that can help bring our ammonia to market,” she said, adding that the partners will work together to ensure a ‘safe, efficient and customer-friendly’ infrastructure for bunkering.

Runar Hatletvedt, managing director of ASCO Norge, highlighted how the use of ammonia will need new infrastructure, such as storage tanks and bunkering facilities. “ASCO is ready to establish such facilities, ensuring that this is done in a safe and sustainable manner,” he said.

“In this partnership, we will conduct risk assessments and ensure that the facility meets national safety standards and regulations.”

Simen Hauland, project manager of P2X/Renewables at St1, said that the company would promote knowledge about ammonia and help ensure its supply. “By working together, we can accelerate the pace of the energy transition and encourage operators and shipowners to invest in ammonia-powered vessels,” he said.
