Svitzer’s industry first electric-methanol tug

The ground-breaking port vessel will feature a 6MWh battery and dual-fuel methanol engines for range extension, offering zero-emission services for up to 25% of Svitzer’s operations in Gothenburg. 

“Battery solutions are becoming crucial in the sustainability transition. This electric tug will significantly reduce emissions, marking a new chapter in decarbonising our fleet and ensuring sustainable marine services across global ports,” said Kasper Nilaus, CEO of Svitzer.

Efficient operations

Designed with the help of Robert Allan Ltd, the tug will be 34.9 metres long, deliver 85 tonnes of bollard pull and reach speeds of 14 knots.

It will complete more than 90% of operations using battery power, reducing the environmental impact and ensuring efficient operations in the Port of Gothenburg.

Gareth Prowse, head of decarbonisation at Svitzer, said: “This new build is a significant milestone in our decarbonisation journey. It enables us to deliver low-emission services while maintaining high safety and operational standards.”

This innovative port vessel will contribute to Gothenburg’s ambition of becoming the world’s most sustainable port. With ongoing investments in shore power and methanol bunkering, the port is well-positioned to support the tug’s future servicing requirements into the future.

The electric tug is set to be operational by late 2025.
