Tanjung’s methanol bunkering first

The operation involving the Antonia Maersk, the third in Maersk’s fleet of 18 large methanol-powered newbuilds, highlights PTP’s growing capability to support methanol as a sustainable shipping fuel.

“This milestone underscores PTP’s commitment to alternative fuels and solidifies its position as a leading port in the region,” said Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, PTP Chairman.

“By enabling methanol bunkering, we are paving the way for future green fuel solutions.”

Future partnerships

The operation was carried out with PTP’s collaboration with Maersk, Maersk Oil Trading and Malaysian authorities.

“Rigorous safety protocols, risk assessments, and modelling laid the foundation for this operation. It sets a benchmark for future partnerships in alternative fuels and port infrastructure development,” said Mark Hardiman, CEO, PTP.

The bunkering operation aligns with PTP’s focus on sustainable shipping and operational excellence.

Notably, the port maintained record-breaking efficiency in 2024, achieving over one million teu handled monthly for six consecutive months and ranking as the fifth most efficient container port globally.

As demand for alternative fuels like methanol grows, PTP said its investment in port bunkering capabilities helps position it as a key player in the global shift toward greener maritime operations.
