Ulsan executes landmark ammonia bunkering

The operation carried out at Pier 2 of Ulsan Main Port, saw Lotte Fine Chemical supply around 600 tonnes of clean ammonia from the quayside to a 45K-class ammonia dual-fuel gas carrier built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

”It is a meaningful milestone that demonstrates the port’s readiness to support a range of major sustainable marine fuels. “We are committed to spearheading sustainable marine fuel bunkering and strengthening Ulsan Port’s position as a trusted global hub.”

Industry support

UPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding back in January 2024 to promote the ammonia bunkering industry and has since collaborated with stakeholders across the ammonia value chain, including Korean Register, Lotte Fine Chemical, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HMM.

Work has covered policy, regulation, port infrastructure, vessel readiness and fuel supply.

This milestone builds on earlier achievements at Ulsan Port, including LNG and methanol bunkering demonstrations and reflects collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Ulsan Regional Office and the Ulsan Fire Department to ensure safety and operational readiness.

Last year, GP reported that Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) is working to transition from an oil logistics centre to a clean energy hub. Both ammonia and methanol are a key part of the strategy as the port builds up its alternative fuels offering.
