Ulsan expands green methanol bunkering provision

The bunkering operation saw Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) successfully supply green methanol to the Green Future, a dual-fuel bulk carrier chartered by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd, part of the NYK Group.

“This bunkering operation is a milestone that demonstrates Ulsan Port’s capability to deliver commercial-scale green methanol bunkering,” said UPA President, Jae-young Byeon.

“Building on this achievement, we are committed to spearheading sustainable marine fuel bunkering as a trusted global hub.”

Growing expertise

The alternative fuel, produced by OCI Global, was delivered through ITOCHU Corporation’s storage at the OTK Terminal and transferred via port bunkering operations at Ulsan New Port’s Southern Breakwater T/S Pier.

This operation builds on Ulsan Port’s track record of world-first methanol bunkering demonstrations for container ships between 2023 and 2024, highlighting its growing expertise in handling hazardous materials safely while expanding into bulk carrier fueling.

By diversifying beyond traditional fuels, the port strengthens its global competitiveness in alternative fuels and green energy shipping solutions.

In the spring, GP reported that Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) is working to transition from an oil logistics centre to a clean energy hub.

But it’s not just methanol that the port is building a market for.

In early summer, the port made clear that it was also persuing the biofuels market in an effort to position the port as northeast Asia’s premier biofuel hub.
