Ulsan Port advances biofuel leadership

Co-organised by UPA and the Korea Maritime Cooperation Center (KMC) under the auspices of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the forum held on 23 April brought together 300 stakeholders from shipping, energy, shipbuilding and finance sectors.

The event comes on the heels of the International Maritime Organisation’s mid-term greenhouse gas reduction measures, amplifying the urgency for greener fuel adoption.

“Marine biofuels represent a practical alternative that can be implemented immediately without requiring new vessel construction or retrofitting,” said UPA president, Jae-young Byeon.

“UPA will continue to strengthen port-centred biofuel supply networks and create a competitive eco-friendly marine fuel market through our advanced infrastructure and technical expertise.”

UPA presented its vision to establish Ulsan Port as a premier biofuel hub in the region, using its existing petrochemical infrastructure and strategic location with director, Byeong-gu Kim unveiling plans for biofuel supply chain development centred on the port.

Expert-led sessions delivered market insights and case studies on biofuel applications, while a final panel discussion outlined UPA’s roadmap for future investments and partnerships.
