Vlaardingen extends shore power

A joint venture between Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority is already supply shore power to Jinling RoRos on scheduled service to and from Immingham. The DFDS installation will be constructed by Actemium and has been partially made financially possible by subsidies from the central government and the province of South Holland.

Reduction of emissions and noise pollution

Power is delivered to the ships via remotely operated cable from equipment contained within a 40 ft container.

The shore power installation has a capacity of 1.8 MW, equivalent to that used by nearly 1,500 households, and is expected to provide 3.5 GWh per year of electricity. The estimated CO2 reduction resulting from the investment is approximately 2,100 tonnes per year. Shore power also reduces particulate matter, nitrogen emissions and noise pollution.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Eneco have created their Rotterdam Shore Power subsidiary to drive the use of shore-based power in the port. In early 2022, the commissioning of Europe’s largest shore power installation was announced – the installation for Heerema Marine Contractors’ offshore vessels on Landtong Rozenburg. Rotterdam Shore Power is currently working on the construction of a second installation at Boskalis in the Waalhaven.
