WATCH: Hydrogen pilot targets port infrastructure
Duiker Clean Technologies will pilot its AMMONEX system in Rotterdam marking a significant step toward creating a CO₂-free hydrogen value chain.
The company has secured a site at Plant One in the Port of Rotterdam for the project, which will help further position the port as a showcase for innovation in marine alternative fuels and next-generation port infrastructure supporting the energy transition.
“This agreement marks an important step in the realisation of AMMONEX,” said Mark van Welsen, managing director of Duiker Clean Technologies.
“The pilot enables us to validate our technology in practice and make a concrete contribution to sustainable hydrogen value chains.”
Scaling production
The AMMONEX system addresses a central challenge in scaling green hydrogen production: Efficient transport and local availability.
By converting globally traded ammonia into hydrogen using a highly controlled, emissions-free process, Duiker aims to leverage existing infrastructure while improving efficiency and reliability.
Duiker has been developing the process since 2022, focusing on precise heat regulation to ensure operational stability, long system lifespan and energy efficiency without harmful emissions.
The collaboration with Plant One reinforces Rotterdam’s role as a testing ground for sustainable process technologies within critical port infrastructure.
Support for the AMMONEX project includes funding from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund, the DEI+ subsidy scheme administered by RVO on behalf of the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth and GroenvermogenNL.
The inal investment decision for the project was taken in early 2025, with test results anticipated in 2027.
