Yokohama Ports hydrogen powered RTG

Mitsui E&S has successfully retrofitted a rubber tyred gantry (RTG) crane at the Yokohama Port Minami-Honmoku Pier Container Terminal with a hydrogen fuel cell power pack, replacing its conventional diesel engine generator.

The RTG, originally delivered to Utoc Corporation, now operates as a zero-emission cargo handling machine, fully powered by hydrogen fuel.

This initiative forms part of Utoc’s on-site demonstration project for hydrogen-fuelled cargo handling equipment. By converting the RTG to hydrogen power, the project supports efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions at ports and contributes to Japan’s broader carbon neutrality targets. The deployment represents a significant step in the practical application of hydrogen energy in port logistics.

Through this project, Mitsui E&S says it is demonstrating its technical capability in retrofitting existing equipment and advancing low-emission solutions.

Looking ahead, Mitsui E&S plans to accelerate the development and delivery of hydrogen-powered port equipment and services.
