All-electric for new Brazil terminal

The 28 pieces have been customised based on the terminal’s needs and incorporate technology to enhance efficiency and safety.

The new terminal, located in the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Port Industrial Complex (Suape), Pernambuco, has been under construction since February and is scheduled to open in the latter half of 2026.

“APMT Suape is investing more than US$47 million in modern equipment to consolidate our project in Pernambuco, which will be the first 100 per cent electric terminal in Latin America,” said Aristides Russi Júnior, managing director of APMT Suape.

The investment includes two remote-controlled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes featuring optical character recognition which boosts the reliability of container loading and unloading operations.

These will be joined by seven remote-controlled rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes featuring the same safety enhancements as the STS cranes. The RTGs also include collision avoidance systems to minimise accident risks and prevent trucks from being lifted with locked containers.

Also procured are two electric reach stackers, two electric empty container forklifts, a 16-tonne forklift and fourteen all-electric terminal tractors.

The terminal will also implement a dedicated 5G network, enabling secure real-time information transmission to customers worldwide.
