Environmental Partnership spotlight
Through a unique partnership among business, government and a land conservation organisation, more than 31 acres of forested open space between the Port of Tacoma’s industrial activity and Northeast Tacoma neighbourhoods have been protected in perpetuity.
The Port of Tacoma invested $1.5 million for the forested land, known as “Julia’s Gulch,” while the City of Tacoma added $300,000. Schnitzer Steel provided $320,500 toward the purchase and stewardship of the land. One of the unique aspects of Schnitzer Steel’s contribution was $75,000 dedicated exclusively to the ongoing stewardship of the land. Under the agreement, the Cascade Land Conservancy holds a conservation easement on the property to monitor and protect the land, ensuring it remains open space forever. “We at the Port of Tacoma appreciate the way our customers, tenants, employees and neighbors have embraced our commitment to protect and improve our environment,” said Port of Tacoma Commissioner Clare Petrich. “That means understanding the broader definition of ‘environment’ – what makes us call a place home, how it includes people, businesses, culture and history as well as our natural systems.”
