Itapoá electrifies its port security fleet

This strategic move will result in a significant reduction of over four tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to the distance covered by the vehicle in its annual 36,000-kilometre rounds.

“In addition to the environmental benefits, with the significant reduction in carbon emissions, the 100% electric vehicle will have its batteries recharged at Porto’s own facilities, eliminating the need to travel to gas station,” said José Aurélio Kalfeld, port security manager, Porto Itapoá.

Green partnership

Porto Itapoá adapted the electric vehicles to carry out motorised security patrols on the terminal’s premises in partnership with the surveillance company Segurpro.

Mr Kalfeld said that recharging the vehicle within the port itself has an important impact on operational efficiency.

“Risks related to trips to the gas station are avoided. Furthermore, we will not have the absence of a security professional at the terminal, which would occur during the supply period,” he added.

Porto Itapoá has long been demonstrating its commitment to the energy transition. 

In 2023 and for the second time, the port won the gold seal of the GHG Protocol, a program implemented in Brazil by the Center for Sustainability Studies of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGVces) in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment.

This was largely in part to its US$40 million autonomous RTG project. The new remote-control ZPMC RTGs can consume up to three times less fuel than conventional ones.

Also in 2023, Porto Itapoá changed its energy acquisition policy opting to consume, in its new contracts, only energy from renewable sources.

The transaction is certified by I-REC(e), a global renewable energy attribute tracking system designed to facilitate reliable accounting of renewable energy that is attributed to the consumer.
