Adani group unveils Orissa mega-port plan

The Adani group, which already operates Mundra Port on Indias West Coast, is poised to create what could be the largest private port in India on the eastern coast of the country.

The company plans to invest $2.24bn to build a 16-berth facility capable of handling 100m tonnes, broadly similar to the capacity at Mundra.

Development will be in two phases, with 12 berths operational by 2015-16. The port is expected to handle coal, iron ore, liquid bulk and containers.

The proposed Adani-Kalinga Port is awaiting permission from Orissa State government.
