Automation is the end goal

He uses the Port of Helsinki’s Vuosaari Harbour gate system as an example. Within the port, there are the port authority, three competing terminals – Multi-Link, FinnSteve and SteveCo – and Finnish customs, all using a different version of Visy Access Gate.

The system is designed so that a truck can enter the main gate, go to the SteveCo terminal and drop off a box, drive to FinnSteve and pick up a box, clear customs and exit the port all in a single trip. It incorporates damage inspection imaging and an elaborate traffic guidance system.

John Lund has just relocated to London to head up a new Visy UK operation. The company has three major gate systems installed in the UK – at Tilbury, Grangemouth and DFDS Immingham.

“We think there are great opportunities in the UK in the future,” says Mr Lund.
