Everybody needs good neighbours
One thing that port operators need to bear in mind is how they interact with the nearby community: noise and pollution levels are just two factors that port operators need to consider with respect to the neighbours.
A forthcoming Australian grain export terminal has pledged to keep the neighbours in mind when it opens.
The $28 million Newcastle Agri Terminal will oversee grain exports. It will boast five large grain silos at the Dyke 2 Berth, in addition to conveyors and ship loading facilities. However, operations will take place within the parameter of only a few hundred metres from people’s homes in the area of Carrington.
Executive director Jock Carter has, however, said that the terminals’ environmental management plan will maintain good community relations, and that the community and environment will be put first.
The terminal is expected to open in June 2013, and Cargotec has said that it will provide equipment that will help keep the environment in mind – including a Siwertell SBL 1600TTL 2,000tph ship loader, a cascade chute and an 182m long enclosed jetty belt conveyor and tipper, in order to allow for dust-less grain transfer. Bertil Anderson, Cargotec’s sales manager said that the technology involved in the new project allows for an “environmentally-friendly solution which will fit well with planned efficiency and environmental issues”.
