Amsterdam lights up Rietlanden Terminals

Rietlanden Terminals BV at the Port of Amsterdam has become the ‘world’s first’ terminal to be illuminated entirely by high-power LEDs.

Using LED lighting will increase the company’s sustainability and fits in well with the Port of Amsterdam’s environmental plans. Rietlanden Terminals says the energy savings amount to around 60% compared to existing lighting solutions. This is also down to dimmable light fixtures.

Ed Nieuwenhuizen, chief financial officer, Port of Amsterdam, said: “This is an excellent example of a sustainable application that not only saves energy but improves safety too.”

“Our energy bill will drop with this approach we’re also helping to increase sustainability in the port area,” added Karl Schot, managing director, Rietlanden Terminals.

The new LEDs means the light is less diffused, providing further environmental benefits, while the white light also increases safety, which in turn improves working conditions.

Funding for the LED project was awarded to Rietlanden Terminals in the form of a grant from the Port of Amsterdam Sustainability and Innovation Fund.

Rietlanden Terminals carries out clean storage and transhipment operations and handling of dry bulk and scrap metal at the Port of Amsterdam. It has three large terminals, five floating cranes and a range of onshore equipment.

The lighting was supplied by the Netherlands’ LED Lightin Eindhoven.
