Auckland launches first fully electric ferry

The new vessel, the first in EV Maritime’s EVM200 series, will operate between downtown Auckland and the suburb of Half Moon Bay.

“This is a transformative moment for maritime transport in New Zealand,” said Michael Eaglen, chief executive of EV Maritime. “We’re incredibly proud to launch this vessel and bring the EVM200 platform to Auckland.

“It reflects our commitment to protecting the environment while maintaining the reliability and convenience of water-based public transport.”

Built using lightweight carbon fibre and powered entirely by batteries, the ferry offers service speeds up to 25 knots and a range of 20 miles. It can carry 200 passengers on a fully enclosed main deck, plus 30 more on an upper deck.

Developed with support from the New Zealand government and as part of Auckland Transport’s low-emissions initiative, the EVM200 ferries include the new CharIN Megawatt Charging System which allows the vessel to recharge in just 10 minutes between trips via twin 1.1MW inlets.

“This ferry is not only quiet and emission-free but also efficient,” said Eaglen. “With global components and local talent, we’re building vessels that support jobs and climate goals alike.”

EV Maritime is also growing internationally, with projects underway in North America, Australia and Europe. Recent developments include a hybrid-electric ferry for San Francisco Bay and a partnership to deliver electric vessels for Halifax, Canada.

“We’re enabling local shipbuilders to enter the electric vessel market,” said Eaglen. “That’s how we scale sustainable change.”
