Danish offshore wind investment
A Danish port has welcomed a government proposal to establish an offshore wind island hub.
The Bornholm island-based Port of Roenne, which has been selected as the storage and pre-assembly port for wind turbine components related to the 600MW Danish Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm being constructed by Vattenfall, said it supports the government’s plans to establish a 2GW offshore wind-farm next to the island and connect the two by 2030.
“We are pleased that Bornholm has been appointed by the Government to become an energy island, that a 2 GW offshore wind farm is proposed to be located next to Bornholm and the Baltic Sea-region is given political priority, so the climate- and energy ambitions now also apply to the easten part of Denmark and the regions in the Baltic Sea,” said Thomas Bendtsen, CEO of Port of Roenne. “This means, that all of Denmark will enjoy the effects of employment and local growth, which comes as a result of the construction of offshore wind farms in Denmark.”
Mr Bendtsen said the port has the right infrastructure to provide offshore wind service following its project to built a 150,000sqm port area specifically designed to handle heavy loads such as wind turbine-parts from the offshore wind industry.
In January, the port announced it had been selected by MHI Vestas for pre-assembly and shipment of turbine components for the 257MW Arcadis Ost 1 offshore wind farm.
The idea of making Bornholm a green energy island first took shape in November 2019, when Ørsted suggested placing a gigant offshore wind farm next to the island, on the already screened sea-area at ‘Rønne Banke’.
